Who are the Storytellers now? A great Xchange!

In case you missed this inspiring evening at The Lyric, here are some of the highlights…   ‘As designers, makers and producers we are the visual storytellers of our age’ Fiona Watt, Honorary Secretary of the Society of British Theatre Designers.   Facilitated by Fiona Watt, speakers Jim Whyte (Trends and Insights Specialist) and Tupac Martir (Creative Director and Founder of Satore Studio) explored the provocation, ‘Who Are the Storytellers Now?’ With a broadening gap between text and experience-based narratives (against a backdrop of emerging technologies), we explored how storytelling impacts on the world of brands, retailers and entertainment. ‘There is always a human need for storytelling.’ Jim Whyte, Trends Specialist.   Jim Whyte explored how the landscape in which traditional brands have told their stories is being heavily influenced by the digital world. However this presents it’s own challenges- particularly in connecting with and conveying empathy to their audiences. Effective storytelling needs to appeal to all the senses, with human engagement at its core. This is where ‘immersive experience’ now provides the perfect platform for brands and retailers to strengthen the dialogue with their customers. The Value of Design: Who are the Storytellers now?

FootprintXchange: ‘Who are the Storytellers now?’ is the first in a series of events where we will be exploring the Value of Design over the course of 2017. FootprintXchange is a hosted event with guest speakers, followed by discussion with the wider audience.  It offers an informal arena to meet and engage with fellow professionals from business and commerce, academia, and subsidised sectors.  Xchange focuses on subjects that impact our shared futures within the entertainment, theatre, retail, branding and events sectors, with discussions often leading to new, exciting collaborations and projects. In this session, we will explore the hot topic of who are the Storytellers now? Aside from sharing latest insights in immersive audience and brand experience, we will question whether technology enhances or hinders storytelling for artists, designers, producers, brands, and retailers. We are partnering with The Society of British Theatre Designers to bring you an engaging evening at Lyric Theatre Studio, Hammersmith on Tuesday 7th March 2017. Doors open 6.30pm.  The SBTD are a professional association supporting and celebrating the diverse range of design for performance made nationally and internationally by UK based designers. Our guest speakers for this event are: Tupac Martir, Visual Artist and Creative Director Tupac is a multimedia artist, visual designer and creative director, specialising in light, who has provided production design, visuals and lighting direction for Elton John, Sting, New York Festival of Light, Xu Bing at the V&A Museum and the Serpentine Gallery. Footprint Xchange presents

Another great evening of talk and debate from Footprint Xchange! Footprint Xchange is rapidly becoming a major debate forum for the theatre, events, experiential branding and commercial sectors. If you missed it…here are the highlights of our most recent Xchange on 360 degree filming and the virtual world. We were delighted to partner with Amelia Kallman of Engage Works, and Tom Watt, Director of Photography, at Camberwell Studios where we were joined by a brilliant audience from the world of theatre, film, museums, events and digital production. It’s clear that what people want is an increasing exposure to experience – virtual or augmented – whether it’s using 360 degree filming to tease our senses, or wearing VR headsets for a more complete sensory simulation. Tom spoke about the challenges to 360 filming – giving us an insight into lighting and adapting traditional skills to the new technology. Amelia explored the physical and mental impact of VR. The discussion that followed was fascinating – we even touched on how these new technologies can enhance empathy even as far as to stepping into the ‘paws’ of animals – or being Beyonce for a day. But is there a payback in a world where the rate of progress is outstripping regulation? The Q&A session opened up even more topics and the conversation could have gone on and on. Footprint are in collaboration with Fiona and currently working towards our next Footprint Xchange event, which is coming soon! The Society of British Theatre Designers (SBTD) www.theatredesign.org.uk turned 40 in July 2015. Founded by designers, for designers, the first open meeting was held in November 1975 in Covent Garden and many of the topics of conversation in terms of supporting and celebrating the work of performance designers based in the UK remain strikingly resonant. We act as a hub for the sharing of information and communication between designer members at every stage of their career development. We are seen as the first point of communication in the UK by the international performance design community, and by national and international companies seeking professional designers. We provide important industry related information for our members and promote their work through our website as well as publishing a quarterly journal, sending regular e-newsletters by email, publishing the work of members on our website and organising training, seminars and regular informal networking events. Footprint are in collaboration with Camberwell Studios and currently working towards our next Xchange event at the beginning of September. Camberwell Studios opened for business on Valentine’s Day in 2009 in the darkness of the 2008 Global Banking crisis fallout. Despite some initially hard times getting started Camberwell Studios has established itself as one of London’s best value independent film studios. We asked Andy Woodruff MD of the business about his customers and what changes he had seen over that period. Variety is the spice of life and new flavours are being found all the time. Our Studio 1 We started the studios partly as a reaction to our experiences trying to find a reliable soundproof green screen space to film in and partly because we believed the future of online was going to be video and there would eventually be an increase in demand. These types of shoots, normally a presenter against a green screen background, or interviews have been a mainstay of our smaller studios business. In the larger space, also green screen but not soundproof, we have hosted hundred and hundred of adverts, music videos, mainstream films pieces, art pieces, TV shows, animation and more. Clients range right across the spectrum from top Production Houses, Indie Filmmakers and an increasing number of small fleet of foot independent production companies and marketers learning how to do it themselves.
